Production records are a vital historian’s tool – from these, you can ascertain what were the most popular variations of any given model range, what colours sailed out of the showrooms, and what were the favoured engine options. Most significantly, we will all know how exactly many cars were built in total…

With MG Rover falling into administration in April, it took the Heritage Motor Centre in Gaydon to secure the production records, although these are not available for public viewing yet. So, until then, all we know is that the final 75 made it to Gaydon, the final ZT V8 went to the SMC dealer group, the last fwd ZT was retained by Nanjing, and the final TF is in private hands…

There’s still much to do.

The cars

SO far, we have discovered the following details:

Rover 25, MG ZR, 45 MG ZS: When production finally halted in April, the cars that were left on the line remained unfinished for a while. XPart sent in a wave of people to strip parts of some of the cars sitting on the 25/45 line, but once the contractors moved in to extract this line for shipping to China, the decision was made to finish some of the cars that were removed from the line – it is estimated that 40 ZRs were completed, and ZS numbers are currently unknown. These cars have been finished much later than the ZT and TF models we saw being finished in May and June, and were taken delivery of in April 2006.

Rover 75, MG ZT: Several of these were finished during the administration period, and were hand-built by key line workers (ten from the 25/ZR, ten from the 45/ZS and ten from the 75/ZT line), who went from station to station working on one car at a time. The final 75 remains at the Heritage Motor Centre in Gaydon (confirmed), and the last ZT (a black diesel saloon) was retained by Nanjing, and it is unsure what fate awaits it. The final ZT to escape from Longbridge, was a ZT 180 Automatic in Pearl Black, chassis number 355192…

Rover 75/MG ZT V8: Now confirmed that the last car wears the chassis number 883, which was built after MG Rover went into administration. All other V8s were produced before this point in time. The final ZT is a Pearl Black SE saloon…

MG TF: The final model, a Sonic Blue TF 135 is said to have come off the line on June 17, at 13.07 – and it is now in private hands. This is yet to be confirmed, but is looking very likely indeed.

Geneva Motor Show 2004, and MG Rover announced the Rover 75 V8 saloon. In 2005, it re-surfaced in Eastern Europe (chassis number 215).
