Coventry Fire Stops Work At Cowley
FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT
OXFORD, SEPT. 23

Two thousand day and night shift workers at the Cowley factory of the Pressed Steel Company are without work because of yesterday’s fire at the Rootes factory at Coventry.

A Pressed Steel Company official said that they were in “high volume production ” of car bodies for the Rootes group. It was expected that the interruption would be short and the men would be called back as quickly as possible. Full car production at the Rootes Group factory at Ryton-on-Dunsmore is to restart on Monday, Sir Reginald Rootes, deputy chairman of the group, said yesterday. Some damage had been done to assembly tracks, but it did not appear to be extensive.

Stores containing electrical and other accessories were burnt and between 200 and 300 cars were damaged. The damage is estimated at not less than £250,000.
