I must admit that I’m suffering from banger rally withdrawal symptoms. Yes, I know I am not going to get any sympathy from you because, since landing my dream job at Octane magazine, 2009 has been a continuous box ticking exercise for me as, week after week, I’ve found myself going to great places and driving some amazing dream cars…
However, my taste for real world cars remains as strong now as it ever did. The fact that I still favour the sub-£500 motors in my fleet over just about anything else and my unfeasible excitement at the recent purchase of my Lancia Dedra should tell you all you need to know.
Missing from my life this year, though, has been a good old slug of sub-£150 banger rally action. Between 2004 and 2008 that was ably accommodated by the Staples2Naples and CzechWrecks rallies but, this year, a busy schedule and a distinct lack of money have meant I’ve not been able to slake my thirst for adventure behind the wheel of some piece of tat.
Fortunately, thanks to Andrew Elphick and Rob Bambridge, we’ve now come up with a plan to do it, but not, if you see what I mean. CzechWrecks is currently running and is due to finish in Prague on Monday evening. Rob’s nice Team Piston Broke Audi Coupe wasn’t due to come back: a pressing engagement in Mr Bambridge’s world of high finance meant that Rob needed to be back on Tuesday and there was no way he’d get his Coupe back. In short, he was going to have to sell it in Prague.
That’s when Andrew came up with a plan. How about he flies out to Prague on Monday, meets up with Rob and drives the car back to Blighty? And I was invited to come along as a co-driver. Me likey.
And that’s why, on Monday, I’ll be flying out to Prague with Andrew, with the sole intent of driving back this fine piece of German engineering. It should be a fun, albeit brief, adventure on foreign soil in an, umm, banger-ish car. More importantly, we rescue a car for a mate and have some laughs along the way. What could possibly go wrong?
