Archive : Rover Revises 200 And 400 Ranges

Following the successful launch in April of the new Rover 200 and 400 SEi, iL and iS new derivatives, Rover has revised and simplified both ranges to provide outstanding specification and value for money. Following the repositioning of both 200 and 400 ranges i, Si, SLi, and GSi models have been replaced by new derivatives.

Jim Macdonald, Rover Cars UK managing director said: “The new SEi, iL and iS derivatives are proving extremely popular with customers. We have therefore revised the entire 200 and 400 ranges to provide unbeatable value for money and equipment levels.”

NEW ROVER 200 MODELS

200SE
The new entry model for the Rover 200 range is now the new 211SE 8v three-door which is priced at £7,995. With standard features such as driver’s airbag, power steering, alarm, immobiliser and stereo cassette, this model is very competitive against equivalent cars such as Ford Fiesta, Peugeot 206 and VW Polo.

There are also 1.4 litre petrol and 2.0 litre diesel versions of the SE models which are fitted with remote control central door locking.

200iE
The new iE models offer additional levels of equipment with electric sunroof, electric front windows, driver’s seat height and lumbar adjustment and an RDS radio cassette with steering wheel mounted remote controls, all added to the specification of the SE cars. This trim level is available with six engines: 1.1 8v, 1.4 8v, 1.4 16v and 1.6 16v K Series petrol engines plus both the 86Ps and 105 Ps L Series diesel engine. The 200iE is priced from £9,995.

NEW ROVER 400 MODELS

Starting at just £12,495 for the 414iE 16v, these derivatives offer outstanding value for money with air conditioning, electric front windows, electric and heated door mirrors, driver’s seat height and lumbar support as standard. All 1.6 and 2.0 litre petrol and 2.0 litre diesel derivatives also have ABS.

400iXL
In addition to equipment fitted as standard to the 400iE models, the 1.6, 2.0 and diesel iXL variants also feature electric rear windows, front fog lamps, passenger airbag and alloy wheels. Prices start at £15,495 for the iXL 1.6. At £13,295 the 414iXL features ABS and electric rear windows as standard.

400 Executive
These cars represent the ultimate Rover 400. With full leather seats, CD autochanger and cruise control on the 2.0 litre petrol model, the Executive provides luxurious motoring at a price which is the best in class.

EXISTING 200 & 400 MODELS

SEi
The SEi offers a low-cost route to owning a highly specified Rover 400, which sells for £10,995. The SEi 400 model has unique wheel trims and features special interiors with fabric seats. Electric sunroof, central door locking and CD tuner are also standard. This model is very competitive against equivalent cars: Vauxhall Astra, VW Golf, Peugeot 306 and Renault Megane.

iS
Complementing the acclaimed Rover K Series 1.4, 1.6 and 2.0 litre petrol and 2.0 litre diesel engines, the iS has a “sporting” look. Both 200 and 400 versions feature electric front windows, half-leather seats, front fog lamps, CD tuner, alloy wheels and rear spoiler (Rover 200 and five-door 400). The 400 iS also benefits from air conditioning while the 200 models have an electric sunroof.

Rover 200 and 400 both have renowned ride qualities. These are complemented by the iL package of luxurious interior trim and carpets. Highly specified interiors come with air conditioning, electric front windows, and a CD tuner. The 216iL now costs £13,495 with an automatic version available at no extra cost. 1. Interesting reading from the archive.  Prices also interesting to see.  I once had a 1997 R414Si bought in 2001 for £5495.  I guess it was equivalent to the 414iS mentioned here.  The 420 Executive would have been nice – tad pricey though?

  2. My 1999 420 iS has a seat design similar to a R8 sei, half leather but with burgundy piping that matches the carpet, strange then that the door card don’t match they are the standard grey colour.I dont think there many around as mine is the only one i’ve seen in that trim.

  3. I have a 2000 Rover 414is and its a nice comfortable car to drive. I am surpised that back in the day you need 2000 more to buy a 416is over the 414is and only an extra 1000 over the 416is to buy a 420is. I would have thought it would have been the other way around.
The is models should have had electric mirrors as well though the ie models do but the is and even the il missed out on electric mirrors. Even if it had been an extra cost option it would have been better
