Car of the Month : June 2002

Dale Turley bought this 1993 Rover 820 Vitesse just a couple of months ago, to replace his Triumph 1500 as his everyday car.

The car provides an attractive blend of performance, space and luxury, and will also be pressed into service towing Dale’s Castleton Rovana caravan.

Looking resplendent in Rover’s popular metallic British Racing Green and sitting on standard 16″ alloys, Dale’s car hides its years rather well. It is powered by a 1994cc T-series 16-valve twin-cam engine, with multipoint fuel injection and a Garrett T25 turbocharger with intercooler, producing 177bhp and 159lb ft of torque. All of which provides some impressive official performance figures: top speed is 138mph, while the 0-60mph dash can be covered in under 8 seconds.

To ensure its occupants travel in comfort, the car boasts half-leather Recaro seats, electric windows all-round, electric sunroof and mirrors, central locking, power steering and climate control.

The car may not look quite like this for much longer: in the first of a series of planned modifications, Dale has just fitted a turbo-boost gauge. Other items on his wish-list include a replacement air filter and exhaust, a dump valve (and bleed valve), slightly lowered and uprated suspension and possibly rechipping.
