The problem with the Defender is that LR don’t sell enough of them to justify the cost of a direct back to basics replacement. The 3rd world market was lost to Toyota years ago, the Army is moving towards tougher, bomb proof vehicles. Jeep is in a similar position, financially it makes much more sense to produce more upmarket vehicles that can exploit the brand ‘heritage’ that BMW/Audi SUVs can never have.

One of the new vehicles being discussed I saw wearing camoflague materials on the A46 last Saturday. It was the same size as a current generation Discovery and similar in height as the current Freelander. Sadly it was travelling on the opposite carriageway so I was not able to see any more details in terms of basic shape or wheelbase etc.

If all this is correct then it’ll be a big big shame. I think the Disco is pretty much in Range Rover territory in terms of refinement and luxury, compared to what it originally was, a Defender with comfort.

Now that the new Range Rover Sport is available with seven seats, where does that leave the Disco?

And as for turning the Defender into a lifestype SUV, well, the less said about that the better. I just hope they don’t use the Defender name on a beefed up Skoda Yeti…

Then again, if it keeps people in the UK in jobs then we can’t really complain. I still think that Land Rover (and Jaguar) is something we can be proud of, but the thought of them cutting ties with their roots with rugged basic workhorses genuinely makes me feel quite sad.

I don’t care a lot about the Freelander replacement, but it is a damn shame that the Defender isn’t being replaced.

Maybe Toyota will step into the breach with their long-running Land Cruiser 70 series (the hard top was sold here for a few years as the Prado). These tough, no frills vehicles are probably the last of the ‘first world’ traditional off roader, along with the Mercedes G Wagen, which is too pimped-up and far too expensive for serious use as a rugged off roader by farmers and utilities.

Autocar are reporting that the new Freelander is not to be a Freelander – the name is to be retired, and instead it’ll become a mini Discovery.

http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/new-land-rover-freelander-join-extended-discovery-family

So what was intended to be the LR Defender-Discovery link model is to join the model name of what was intended to be the LR Defender-Range Rover link model.

This comes on the back of news that the Defender is not to be replaced by a rugged model:

http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/plans-new-land-rover-defender-shaken

So, presumably they’re trying to to a MINI with the Defender, create a model that pays homage to the original, but doesn’t quite have the same USP, instead going after a lifestyle market.

I guess they’ve given up chasing Toyota Land Cruisers, HiLuxes, Mitsubishi L200s etc.
