Love the website, but do you have any material on the development of the diesels in the 90′s – the TD5 and the L series engines namely? |

You know I don’t think there is that much on the Td5 here. I’m quite surprised actually. You might find this interesting though. |

Thanks for the link, I’ve spent ages on that website now! A full story on the TD5 would be great, wasn’t it supposed to be part of a range of 4, 5 and 6 cylinder smokers for Rover? I love the sound of a TD5 – I can’t describe it really; its not a roar or a growl, maybe a diesely burble… |

Gents, its in the pipeline. Upcoming “plant” articles include Leyland bus & truck diesel engines, the Perkins Prima / MDi / L series and the TD5 |

@ BobM. You’re welcome. I’d describe the Td5 sound as being agricultural, yet aristocratic…or something like that @ Mike Humble. Can’t wait |

@ Bob M: The TD5 was indeed part of a modular engine design, codenamed Storm. This would have resulted in a new 2-litre four cylinder unit (to have replaced the L Series unit), the 2.5-litre five cylinder TD5 unit and a new 3-litre six-cylinder unit exclusvely for the second generation Range Rover. It has been suggested by many authorities on this very subject that development work on Storm was progressing before BMW acquired the Rover Group in January 1994. As BMW’s executives went through Rover Group’s future product and engine plans, they [BMW] pointed out that they were already developing a new four-cylinder diesel unit for the next generation (E46) BMW 3 Series due out in 1998, while a new 3-litre turbo-diesel six cylinder unit was also progressing. It was felt to be counter productive to allocate funds to the four and six cylinder versions of the Storm project, although BMW did give approval for the continued development of the five cylinder TD5 unit, to replace the 300TDi unit already in use in the Defender and first generation Discovery. |
