From the recent story on CCT, it sounds as if the MG5 (chinese version at least) is a bit of a damp squib. Is this car really fit to carry the MG name, can it hope to compete with Astras and Golfs?

No – but cars like this are the reality of the new MG

Yeah, I have got to admit that spec is shameful for an MG – there is no safety and definitely no fast with the arrangement they have described. And four speed autos and 5 speed manuals with a 109hp engine, are they importing drivetrains from the 1980′s for these?

Oh dear, so so very sad indeed….. :-?

This , once again seems a pretty pointless question at the moment.

No-one here has;
a) seen one in the metal
b) driven one
c) had any other experience or even read about anyones particular experiences of them

You can’t possibly formulate an opinion of a cars worthyness to wear a particular badge based on a few pics and a couple of paragraphs of text and a spec sheet.

Give the thing chance to get here and make you mind up then, SURELY

I don’t think other sites see a few pre-production shots of cars and start questioning it’s ‘right’ to wear their badge, so why, oh why do we???

How many times have we all been down this route? :roll: I agree with Mark Mastro on this. Let’s wait and see. It’s very easy for us (me included) to sit down a slag a car off without driving it. How many of us laughed at Hyundai and Kia (and Datsun) before driving them? Now who’s laughing?
I’m not saying the MG5 will be anything special, but let’s all wait and see.

Looking at the MG5 and the concept car and I wondered what happened? The concept was good looking and sporty, the MG5 looks nice at the front but the rest looks frumpy!

@ daveh. Nearly every concept gets toned down before production. Either in the interest of meeting safety regulations or just keeping the cost down…the only car I can think of that wasn’t changed before production was the Dodge Viper.

@markosity 1973 – It does sound pretty awful, certainly not as good as it needs to be for MG to recapture it’s past glory. Engine, suspension and interior particularly need to be improved before it comes here or over to you.

Let’s be fair to this car, it’s simply a cheap and (name aside) unpretentious Asian hatchback that should be sold on price against other sub prime manufacturers from the far east. The MG badge is meaningless, it was just something they picked up for a song when the company finally died in 2005.

I have no particular idea what relevance this, entirely Chinese manufactured, car has on a site whose slogan is “Made in Britain”.

So should we feature the Qashqai and Toyota Avensis instead?
