http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-16903582 The end of an era as Mitsubishi announce they are closing their plant in the Netherlands, the former Volvo/DAF factory. Times are though out there… |

Can’t say I’ll shed a tear for anything that plant has produced. Frankly I’m surprised it’s taken this long. |

I assume that’s where they built the old Volvo V40′s, seeing as they shared vast chunks with one of the Mitsubishi’s. I’ve always found Mitsubishi’s really well designed, everything is where just where you want it, and they’re incredibly well engineered but generally really dull. The Outlander is that thing they also build as a Citroen/Peugeot isn’t it? |

@ Dennis. Right you are. It shares its platform with the Citron C-crossover and Peugeot 4007…it also shares its platform with the Grandis and the Dodge Caliber. |

In some ways what’s more poignant is the plant’s origins as the former DAF factory, and then producer of the infamous Volvo 340. As SAAB dies, this closure will see the end of the Dutch car industry. |

Sorry, what I meant was that as SAAB dies, at the same time the Dutch car indsutry ends. |

The plant had a reputation for poor quality, and the Carisma they used to make there had to be the worst built ‘Jap brand’ car ever. Poor electrics, rust, dire build quality |

To be fair the early Carisma model was not of the high standard of the usual Jap Built Mitsu’s – but this was resolved reasonably quickly once Volvo wree out of the picture ( makes you wonder then how ‘bad’ other european cars must be – even today?)Today The plant is highly efficient and now builds very good cars indeed. Its a shame it has to close due to economic factors, but that the way of things thesedays alas. OK, Mitsubishi’s might not be as exciting as some makes, but they are well built, reliable cars none the less -surely thats just as important these days as anything else? So this mean Colts etc will come from japan next yesr…oh well, thats how it all started I suppose! |

To be fair Marty B, the early Carisma’s were NOT that bad .. It all depends on what you compared them with! Agaianst a Jap Built Mitsu, yes they were not great, but compared to a Ford or Vauxhall or even a Rover(ouch) they were fine. Early Carisma’s are still on the road too, they were not rot boxes. I agree that they were mind bendingly dull though, but thats why the ‘Hinge and Bracket’ brigade loved them – and came back and bought another. |
