THE Government will do “whatever it can to support Jaguar Land Rover”, the Chancellor said this morning, as some of his policies were branded “absurd” by a Liverpool business leader.
Speaking at a business breakfast at the Malmaison hotel, Alistair Darling said the car industry, Jaguar and General Motors, are very important to the North West and the whole country: “We are in constant touch with the industry and we will do whatever we can to support it.
“I know that my colleague Peter Mandelson has been in touch with Jaguar and will remain in touch and we will do whatever we can.”
At the breakfast meeting Jack Stopforth, Chief Executive of Liverpool Chamber of Commerce told the Chancellor that some Government policies were absurd. He said: “I think your decision to levy full business rates on empty business premises is absurd. With the greatest respect I think it has put a break on development and it really needs addressing.”
He also took up the issue of port rates that are hitting Merseyside businesses.
