Jaguar Land Rover’s unending march to world domination continues with the arrival of the first Chinese-made Land Rover Discovery Sport at the Chengdu Auto Show. The new car appeared in prototype form, and China News Daily reports that it will go on sale in its home market in October with a price starting around 450,000 yuan (£46,300).

The Discovery Sport will be manufactured by the Chery Jaguar Land Rover joint venture, which already builds the Range Rover Evoque. The engine range in this petrol-dominated market will feature the 2.0-litre Ford EcoBoost only, with a maximum power output of 237bhp. It will be replaced by a petrol variation of the Ingenium later on, although there is no confirmation as to when, as yet.

Land Rover is the dominant JLR marque in China, so sales expectations are high. When AROnline visited the company’s flagship dealership in Beijing back in 2012, we were told that it could sell more units than some of the smaller European export markets in their entirety.

  1. I wonder if the Chinese economic uncertainty will affect things? JLR certainly need the petrol Ingenium for non European markets
