Press Report : Redevelopment of former Jaguar site in Coventry begins

Alun Thorne, Birmingham Post, 5th March, 2009

The transformation has started at the former Jaguar plant at Browns Lane in Coventry, which is set to be the site of a £10million redevelopment by Advantage West Midlands.

The regional development agency took control of the site and plan to turn it into an employment magnet creating new jobs in offices and manufacturing firms.

Ian Austin, the Minister for the West Midlands, was one of the visiting luminaries. He said: “It is vital that key sites like Browns Lane are prepared in readiness for the economic upturn. The region must be in the best position possible to make the most of new opportunities when they arrive.” AWM bought the nine-hectare site from former owner Goodman at the end of last year.

Mick Laverty, Chief Executive of Advantage West Midlands, said: “Our intervention at Browns Lane is a direct response to the economic downturn. In better times the market would have sustained the development. The remediation work itself will also keep people in jobs, while the development of the site will help to address the shortage of employment land in Coventry.”

About the Author:

Clive claims that his interest in the BMC>MG story dates back to his childhood in the 1960s when the family’s garage premises were leased to a tenant with an Austin agency. However, back in the 1920s and 1930s, his grandmother was one of the country’s first female Garage Proprietors so cars probably run in his genes! Admits to affairs with Alfa Romeos, but has more recently owned an 06/06 MG TF 135 and then a 15/64 MG3 Style… Clive, who was AROnline’s News Editor for nearly four years, stood down from that role in order to devote more time to various Motor Racing projects but still contributes articles on as regular basis as his other commitments permit.
