Video : MG Maestro Rallysprint 1983
Keith Adams
The Austin Rover Rallysprint was a legendary annual motor sport event that ran throughout the early 1980s, and saw rally drivers pitched against their F1 counterparts to see which discipline bred the best drivers. In 1983, an all-star grid was assembled that included Nigel Mansell, Jimmy McRae, John Watson, Pentti Arikkala, Derek Warwick, Stig Blomqvist, Danny Sulivan, and Tony Pond – and they were went up against each other on the rally stage, autotest and racing circuit. And it’s here at Donington we’re treated to the field racing in identical MG Maestro 1600s…
Throughout the years, the ARG cars that starred in the Rallysprint included Metros, Maestros, Montegos for the races and autotests, but the more powerful Rover Vitesse and MG Metro 6R4.
Needless to say the action started out cleanly enough, but as the laps passed, the race became more of a contact affair. We won’t give the game away, but given the field, you won’t be surprised to see who won…

Oh aye! THIS is what it’s all about!
Absolutely loved that! They sound so weedy, proper challenge to race them though

@ Ralph
If it’s 1983, then definitely, yes…
A bit like a ‘Star in a Reasonably Priced car’ race! Very amusing!
Would the insurance for F1 / Rally teams cover contact racing?
Absolutely great!
Is it me or is this before the Melbourne loop was added to Donnington?
My goodness, MG Maestro 1600′s managing to go more than 200 yards without a dose of ‘heritage’
