Press Report : Jaguar hides ‘new XJ’ under a psychedelic swirl

John Cranage, Birmingham Post, 8th June, 2009

Jaguar reverted to 1960s psychedelia to disguise the look of this very 21st century car.

Jaguar takes what is believed to be the new XJ out for a spin.

Painted in swirling black and white shapes designed to disguise its body lines, this pre-production version of the company’s new flagship XJ luxury sports saloon was photographed on the road somewhere in Warwickshire.

Jaguar would not confirm that the car was in fact the new XJ – a car the company is on record as saying ‘will make its competitors look like yesterday’s cold potatoes” – but insiders say this is almost certainly the best clue yet as to how it will look.

Another car, heavily disguised with false body panels, has also been spotted between Jaguar Land Rover’s engineering sites at Whitley, Coventry, and Gaydon, Warwickshire.

All new cars are heavily disguised to allow testing to done on public roads before going into production. According to industry insiders it is not uncommon for them to venture out with psychedelic paintwork.  While the paintwork makes them stand out it also blurs and disguises essential details of the body.

The XJ, the first new model to be launched by Jaguar under the ownership of Tata Motors of India, will be officially unveiled in the UK at the end of this year.
