The popular 200/400 range (R8) was replaced by two separate designs car ranges. The 200 replacement was a smaller car, a reworking of the R8, pitched at the Escort market... The new 400, however, was an entirely new car, and one which Rover felt confident enough to price in Mondeo/Vectra territory. The hi-tech Japanese design boasted an advanced specification sheet, and Rover's upper management had a strong belief that it was good enough to sell in huge numbers.
