MG Car Club : MG80! event attracts an estimated 25,000 participants

The worldwide festivities to commemorate the MG Car Club’s 80th Birthday have now officially concluded and over 100 MG clubs from 24 different countries took part in the MG80! celebration in which an estimated 25,000 people participated – the MG Car Club reckons that the event was probably the largest ever global MG gathering to date.

MGs from all eras took part in a vast spectrum of MG80! events and all of these have been recorded on the official MG80! Google Map and uploaded to the event’s jam-packed photo gallery.

The MG Car Club’s General Manager, Julian White, currently in Shanghai helping to form a SAIC Motor-backed Chinese MG Car Club, said:

‘We have been humbled by the scale of the celebrations and truly overwhelmed by the incredible worldwide response. The enthusiasm for this event from all the clubs around the world has been truly amazing and viewing some of the videos and photos gives a flavour of the wide variety of events that people have staged.

‘We have received well over 85 ‘official’ entries and these, combined with several unofficial ones of which we are aware, would lead us to believe that about 100 clubs participated.

In China the MG Club culture is now beginning to really capture the imagination. Since I’ve been here in Shanghai there has been genuine interest from dozens of journalists about the MGCC and I’ve participated in many press conferences.” Julian White, General Manager, MG Car Club Limited

‘In China the MG Club culture is now beginning to really capture the imagination. Since I’ve been here in Shanghai there has been genuine interest from dozens of journalists about the MGCC and I’ve participated in many press conferences.

‘Indeed, back in the UK, a Chinese representative from SAIC Motor was part of the MG80! road run which started at the Roebuck Inn (Stevenage) where the first ever MG Car Club meeting took place.”

The MG80! Google Map has received over 21,000 hits, with 7,800 over the course of the weekend. The MGCC’s social networking platforms have been jammed full of content and there are dozens of  videos on YouTube!
