MINI has confirmed that it will build an electric car in the UK, supporting the announcement made at the F56’s launch that it would continue to ‘invest substantially in Cowley’ and other British manufacturing installations. The new car, which is set for launch in 2019 will be an e-version of the current car in facelifted form.
Cowley, or MINI Plant Oxford if you must, has built its three millionth post-BMW MINI, since since production began in 2001. The 3,000,000th car was a John Cooper Works Clubman with ALL4 all-wheel drive system. Since 2000 £1.75 billion has been invested by BMW Group at the three plants and at Oxford this has included a state-of-the-art paintshop, a high-technology body building facility, a new final assembly area, a new logistics centre, Quality and Engineering Centre and the MINIcademy, where the plant’s apprentices are trained.
The first plug-in hybrid MINI is readying for launch, with development almost completed.
