In March 1981, the Mini 1275 E’s price was increased by R 170 to R 4520. Also in March 1981 a new model called the Leyland Mini “S” appeared in CAR’s price list at R5925 but was discontinued after only three months in May 1981 at the same price. In June 1981 the Mini 1275 E’s price was again increased by R 180 to R 4700 and again in December by R120 to R 4820.

The Leyland Mini “E” model maintained its status as the cheapest car on the South Africa market (although it lost it for a while and for the first time in a very, very long period in the early part of 1981 to the Fiat 128 1100 until the Fiat was discontinued mid-year), with its closest contender the Volkswagen Golf 1100, 2-door at R 610 more.

Leyland Minis were 22nd on the best seller list for 1981 with a total of 3263 units (1st position was held by Volkswagen Golf with 36 069 units). Mini sales represented 1,1% of the market.
