It might have been 13 years in the making, but the Jaguar XJ40 was genuinely one of the best cars in the world when it finally appeared on the scene in 1986...
We take a look at some of the cars it fought against during its production run - it seemed as though the Germans were the keenest opposition.

Verdict
OH, this is an easy one. Whereas the German and Japanese opposition oozed quality and sophistication, none could hold a candle to the Jagaur in terms of driving dynamics and that indefinable quality known as character. Yes, the XJ40's looks are a little awkward - and not exactly progressive - and the interior is cramped, but from behind the wheel, these are hardly problems.
Having said that, we love the bravery of the Audi, even if it doesn't stack up on the road, and is now causing owners a number of expensive headaches in the reliability department. As for the BMW and Mercedes-Benz, there's no doubting their engineering integrity - and in the case of the Stuttgart car, there's a throbby V8 to keep the driver entertained, if he chooses to take the 4-litre option.
As for the Lexus, you can't help but admire what Toyota achieved on an almost unlimited budget - and the awards were reaped in America, where badge snobbery isn't such an issue there.
But hand on heart - we'd plump for the Jaguar every time - and even if they weren't as cheap as they are secondhand, the XJ40's charms would be hard to deny...
