AROnline : Roadworks ahead

Some diversions ahead for AROnline
Some diversions ahead for AROnline

Regular readers can’t have failed to notice that AROnline‘s design is slowly changing. We’ve been fiddling with the WordPress element of the site to improve functionality with the intention so that we can slowly move the content onto this CMS-alike system. There are many reasons for this, but the most necessary one is for multi-user administration…

That’s why, over the coming weeks and months, we’ll be concentrating on transferring the most important parts of the site – namely the car development histories and prototype galleries – across onto WordPress before introducing a new, integrated menu system which should enable us to do away with our Java frame-based system, which has served us so well since 2002.

You’ll probably notice random changes and formatting glitches while we’re in this period of change, but we’ll try and keep downtime to an absolute minimum.

However, whilst we’re doing this, if you do have any comments or suggestions, please drop them in here or email us directly. We’ll be looking for a couple  of things from you guys, though – a nice design for a site header and a stable and stylish left-hand menu system to replace the one to your left. The new designs should, if possible, look and feel like the ones we have already, but must integrate seamlessly into WordPress… There will be a prize for the best one – not sure what it is, but there must be something in the AROnline goody-bag worth having.

More information as we have it…

  1. You say there are roadworks, but really, whilst we’re sitting waiting for the pages to load, you’re leaning on a keyboard with a cup of tea. I expect you’ll explain that the bits take a while to dry before you can put them in the right order or there’s a delivery of ASCII you’re waiting for…

  2. Ahh.. heya, Keith. I’ve noticed that the site isn’t really Netbook friendly and some stuff goes of the edge of the browser – that’s a bit untidy and can be difficult to use on the move.

Just to let you know, I’m using Firefox 4 on a Windows XP system. My screen resolution is 1024×600 – that’s common to nearly all netbooks and small hi-powered PCs (Netbook form but superfast). The depth isn’t too important but the width is. Just a bit of feedback… Thanks.

  3. Keep up the good work Keith – this site is a valuable web resource.

The AROnline logo is not intuitively/obviously the Home page link/shortcut?

Is there a way to update the Updates section automatically – or is it really necessary at all in that format?

  4. @Chris C
The logo should act as a Home page link, but that’s all still very much in the air. Anyway, as it is at the moment, we are running the default scheme on AROnline Live (this bit), so that will change.

The Updates link is going to be redundant soon – it probably already is, so I can strip this from the main navigation menu.

    /K
