News : Strong JLR, MINI and McLaren sales in 2015

Jaguar Land Rover

It’s been a great 2015 in sales and production for British carmakers. In a week when the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) announced record UK car sales figures, Jaguar Land Rover, MINI and McLaren all confirmed they had ended 2015 with significant sales growth.

Taking pole position in the good news stakes is JLR, which achieved its best ever full-year global sales performance in 2015, selling 487,065 vehicles, up 5 per cent on 2014. This is the company’s sixth successive year of growth in sales, with retails in 2015 more than double the 2009 figure.

Meanwhile, MINI made record sales year in the UK in 2015, with 63,581 full-year registrations – this is also the sixth year of consecutive growth here, with registrations up 17.9 per cent on 2014, for 2.41 per cent market share. Rounding out the growth story is McLaren Automotive, which ended 2015 with a record total of 1654 cars delivered in 30 countries. The growth in sales has meant there’s now the need for a second shift at the McLaren Production Centre, with the hiring of 250 production team members.

Land Rover retailed over 400,000 vehicles for the first time, with sales of 403,079, 6.0 per cent up on 2014. The company sold more Range Rovers and Range Rover Sports in 2015 than ever before, on the back of continued strong customer demand.  Sales of the new Discovery Sport, which began in early 2015, have increased to over 10,000 per month, second only to the best-selling Range Rover Evoque.

Commenting on the full year performance Andy Goss, Jaguar Land Rover Group Sales Operations Director, said: ‘This has been a significant year for Jaguar Land Rover, with updated models being introduced across the range, as well as the addition to our portfolio of the completely new Jaguar XE and Land Rover Discovery Sport. In addition, 2016 promises to be another exciting year, with the start of sales of the Range Rover Evoque Convertible and the Jaguar F-PACE, along with further all-new and refreshed vehicles.’

MINI Sales 2015

For MINI the three-door Hatch remained the brand’s biggest selling model, closely followed by its five-door brother. In the first full calendar year of sales, 44,560 Hatches were sold in 2015, while the John Cooper Works sub-brand also celebrated a record year following the June launch of MINI John Cooper Works Hatch – a total of 1487 JCW Hatches were sold last year. Total John Cooper Works sales across the range increased 134 per cent to 2213 vehicles.

Chris Brownridge, Director, MINI UK, said: ‘2015 was a record busting year for MINI in the UK. With the recently-launched MINI Clubman and the forthcoming MINI Convertible on sale in time for spring this year, 2016 is set to be another record-breaking year for the brand.’
In March, the all-new MINI Convertible will launch in the UK. With major refinements against its predecessor, the car features a striking new design and significant enhancements to make open-topped MINI motoring even more dynamic, stylish and practical.

McLaren’s success has been equally welcomed – with the past six years of production all ending in growth. Welcoming the 2015 success for McLaren Automotive and the recruitment of 250 new production roles at the McLaren Production Centre (below) was the Rt. Hon. Sajid Javid MP, Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills. He said: ‘McLaren road cars are some of the most iconic in the world, and I was particularly impressed to hear that more than half of all the components and parts that go into their cars are manufactured here in the UK, and this is creating countless more jobs in the supply chain.’

  1. Which Minis, apart from the three and five door base models, are made here and which are made in Austria?

  2. Surprised you have not mentioned MG in this article. Their sales grew 35% year on year to a total of 3152 units in 2015 with the promise of significant growth in 2016 once the GS suv is launched. Or does MG’s Chinese ownership and the fact they currently ‘only’ design, engineer and finally assemble their cars in the UK, make them somehow different to Indian owned JLR or German owned MINI?

  3. MG no longer final assemble cars here they are now all brought in fully built. Longbridge is just a PDI centre sadly.
