Land Rover expands the Discovery engine range and adds new SVX model

Land Rover unveiled the Discovery SVX and a new 2.0-litre petrol engine option to its S, SE, HSE and HSE Luxury models. The expansion of the engine range will further increase in 2018 with the arrival of a hybrid version – a snippet revealed during the show.

Toughened SVX for hardy off-roaders

The headlines were stolen by the new SVX, though. The SVO-developed SVX majors on the ultimate off-road ability, no doubt helped by being offered exclusively with a thumping 5.0-litre Supercharged V8 pushing out 520bhp.

The SVX gains JLR’s Hydraulic Active Roll Control (H-ARC) suspension setup, which gives increased wheel articulation and improved body control. In addition, it gets optimised Terrain Response 2, Hill Descent Control, Electronic Traction Control (ETC), Adaptive Dynamics, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), All-Terrain Progress Control (ATPC) and variable ratio Electric Power-Assisted Steering (EPAS).

It looks the part, with new front and rear bumpers with protective skid plates and exposed Rush Orange-finished metal recovery eyes – each rated to enable recovery of more than six tonnes, an anti-glare bonnet finish and an integrated rear-mounted electric winch system.

Discovery gains Ingenium 2.0-litre petrol engine

The Land Rover Discovery is now available with a 296bhp four-cylinder Ingenium petrol engine. The engine uses Continuously Variable Valve Lift (CVVL) technology and a twin-scroll turbocharger with ceramic bearings to mine such a high specific power output. The new engine produces CO2 emissions of 222g/km.

There are interior updates, too, with a larger 12.3-inch infotainment screen, standard on HSE and HSE Luxury models. They also get Touch Pro infotainment with JLR’s 10.0-inch touchscreen interface on the centre console. Digital connectivity is enhanced with the introduction of 4G WiFi on SE derivatives and above.

Optional second-generation head-up display technology also provides a full-colour display and wider functionality, even projecting 4×4 information and improved navigation displays onto the windscreen ahead of the driver, while optional Cabin Air Ionisation is available on the Discovery for the first time, delivering improved interior air quality for enhanced passenger wellbeing.
