News : Bentley Bentayga sells out in Frankfurt

_AAA7261

It didn’t take long, but Bentley executives confirmed to Autocar that the first year’s allocation of the Bentayga has already sold out. The car might have met with a cool reception around these parts on stylistic grounds, but clearly it’s hit the ground running, satiating a demand for top-end SUVs that even Land Rover can’t quite reach.

The car, which has a starting price of £160,200, takes over from the Range Rover as the most exclusive all-purpose car, combining an all-new W12 powertrain with usability and astonishing pace. The Crewe-built car has a twin-turbocharged 6.0-litre W12 engine which develops 600bhp and 663lb ft, and Bentley claims a 0-60mph time of 4.0 seconds, and a maximum speed of 187mph.

It’s been loaded with all the technology and toys you’d expect from a manufacturing group that also includes Bugatti and Lamborghini, although we can’t help but think of the Volkswagen Phaeton when we see the tech specs of this leviathan. It’s a new market sector for Bentley and clearly, if pre-launch demand is anything to go by, it’s a car that the well-heeled have been looking for. Expect a Rolls-Royce response sooner than you might think…

  1. It’s often tricky to make styling cues from established saloon/coupe ranges look good on SUV type cars. Just look at the Porsche Cayenne. Make you your own mind if you think they’ve succeeded here.

  2. It sure is ugly but if people around the world are queueing up to buy one and it maintains jobs for the good people of Crewe and the surrounding area it must be a good thing.
