News : MGB Coventry information – can you help?

Do you know anything about the Coventry MGBs?
Do you know anything about the Coventry MGBs?

This year sees the 50th Anniversary of the introduction of the MGB – but did you know that it has a little known Coventry connection? The bodies for the open roadsters built between 1962 and 1969 were built, painted and trimmed in Coventry from major sub-assemblies supplied by Pressed Steel of Swindon. This all took place at the Morris Bodies No. 1 factory in Quinton Road.

As part of the MGB 50th Anniversary celebrations a souvenir book is being planned by the MG Car Club with, the Club hopes, some new stories and pictures of this well-documented car. One area for which very little information or pictures survive today – even in the major museums – is the activities of this Morris factory and the MGB body assembly and finishing.

It would be interesting to hear from any of our readers of recollections of the factory or to see photographs of the MGB body assembly in Coventry. The 50th Anniversary is being celebrated at various events throughout the year culminating in a 50th Birthday at Blenheim Palace on 23 September 2012.

So, if you have any information at all, especially new images, we’d love to hear from you.

  1. Interesting to run AOP 64K through the DVLA’s website: the car’s Date of Liability is recent (01/06/2011) and the colour is listed as… blue. I wonder where it is now?

The appearance of a number plate on a publicity photo doesn’t necessarily mean that it was the correct registration for the car. We used to do all sorts of strange things with number plates – sometimes using dummy plates of numbers given to us by Birmingham Licensing Office as ones that wouldn’t be used – though sometimes they might be issued later on, then we had outraged owners asking why we’d used their reg number!
