News : Motoring Classics launch MeisterSinger MG watches

Motoring Classics MeisterSinger MG watch

The foresight and determination of an ardent German MG enthusiast, Ernst Graaf, have resulted in a unique trio of quality timepieces, the design of which echoes the distinctive shape and structure of a 1950s MG TD radiator grille. The watches have been superbly crafted by MeisterSinger and are available online from British Motor Heritage’s retail arm, Motoring Classics, for £1,405, including VAT and free delivery within mainland Europe.

Graaf’s love affair with the MG marque began with an Olde English White 1964 MGB he ran as a student, and was later cemented by an inexpensive quartz watch modelled on the grille of an MG TD. When attempts to replace the worn timepiece with a newer, MG-branded one came to nought, he set about creating his own. The MG Car Club assisted the cause, as did British Motor Heritage, which was sufficiently impressed with the project to license the use of the MG logo.

The watches feature top quality Swiss movements housed in stainless steel cases that are water resistant to a depth of 5 bar. The dials are protected by hardened mineral glass and the Cordovan straps are crafted from smooth horse leather. There is a choice of three different face/strap combinations appropriately named: ‘Abingdon’, ‘Cecil Kimber’ and ‘Cream Cracker’, in celebration of the MG factory, the company’s founder, and the most famous of the Works MGs respectively. To ensure a suitable degree of exclusivity, production is being limited to around 100 watches per annum.

British Motor Heritage’s Managing Director, John Yea, said: ‘We are delighted to be able offer these superb timepieces for sale and to have played a small part in their development.”

  1. A watchface within a shell modelled on an MG radiator for £1,405, what a tacky looking object comparable to shopping channel jewellery and golfing apparel

  2. I am glad I am not the only one that thinks that they are so wildly over priced, that they are just not worth it, I would rather have a second hand Rolex for that money.

  3. I have a MeisterSinger single hand watch and its a fabulous time piece. They make truly fantastic watches although im not sure MG has the cache to sell at these prices. Around the launch of the RV8 this would of been a good idea.

  4. I wouldn’t pay so much money for a watch (actually I’d baulk at spending more than £30 on one), but for those with the money, I quite like this.

Each to their own, I suppose, but I can think of far worse bits of overpriced automotive-themed tat.

  5. I love how he was seeking to replace a cheap quartz and came to the conclusion that £1,405 was the right price level. I sure hope that means that he won’t ever have to buy it again.
