Land Rover has released a pair of videos (no sound sadly) of its DC100 concept in action. And it has to be said that if it’s trying to convince Defender customers that this is going to be their next purchase, then they might be on to a bit of a struggle. But just as the Mini ACV30 and Spiritual bore no resemblance to the 2000 MINI, it’s unlikely that 2017’s Defender replacement is going to look like the lifestyle oriented DC100.

But as a showcase for the talent of the design team at Gaydon, the DC100 really does cut the mustard. So, sorry to disappoint the pig-carrying, mud-plugging, three-tonne-towing farmers who love the current car, this car isn’t going to be your next motor. But, the chances are, you knew that already.

More DC100 news as it happens.

  1. not my cup of tea really, has a bit of the mary ann about it,lets hope the defender replacement doesnt have the tranny engine in either.

  2. I saw a Santana (i Think thats what they’re called) the Spanish Land rover with twin head lights ON THE m62 recently, maybe that’s the route for those that want the original shape?

  3. Well the current Defender doesn’t have the Transit engine anymore. Replaced a couple of months ago with the 2.2HDi lump from the XF, C6, Mondeo etc.

They didn’t exactly showcase off road abilities in these videos, pretty sure even my mini could have coped with that terrain!

  4. “I saw a Santana (i Think thats what they’re called) the Spanish Land rover with twin head lights ON THE m62 recently, maybe that’s the route for those that want the original shape?”

Santana/Iveco’s aren’t made anymore either. And they were based on a Series 3, leaf springs and all.

  5. Whatever they replace the defender with, I can’t see it being all that bad.. I mean, it’s still Land Rover that’s making it.. Can’t see them missing the point when they make the defender in the 1st place.

  6. I Absolutely love it. The minimalist interior and the Streetwise style exterior. Tough like the old Defender, but modern.

  7. Replace the defender with this = FAIL
This will send the farmers en masse to Toyota overnight. The millitay won’t buy it either, nothing like versatile enough. I can see the urban 4X4 crowd taking to it, but thats not what the defender was

  8. Waiting to see what it looks like in ‘base’ workhorse spec, with UK numberplates ( 😉 ) and mud up the side.

Even something like a Mitsubishi L200 / Izuzu John Denver Rodeo can look a bit flashy until you see one in agricultural / workman spec.

  9. Would have been nice if they had shown that it can be used off road. The level of off-road challenge it overcame could also easily be undertaken by my Austin Allegro……

The new Defender NEEDS to be as good off-road or JLR will lose customers!

  10. I think it looks absolutely superb – and if it handles as well off-road as the current Defender then I would not worry too much about the farmers. I have a couple of farming friends and they’re not as conservative as you might think. Have you seen modern tractors these days?

  11. Too up market to replace Defender.

LR has already made the mistake of moving the Freelander and Discovery out of their original market slots, and now runs the risk of doing the same with the foundation of the Brand.

  12. crap, just lost the traditional market in one blow.Yuppies will like it but real farmers will stick to traditipnal 4wd like the expensive but authentic Mercedes G Wagon,or Toyotas etc…

  13. Richard and Stewart are right on, couldn’t put it better myself. Already loads of farmers are on Jap stuff. Thankfully a lot of them run old bangers (even not road legal sometimes if it;s just for use round the farm) so it’ll take years for defenders and early discos/range rovers to be replaced.

  14. I can’t help but think that this is just an insult to the Defender / Series faithful. Thanks for your support for the past 63 Years, now F*** You we’re now going to abandon you and build a Barbie Car instead.

  15. “Ugly as sin. I think I need a lie-down.”

The original Series/Defender has never exactly been what could be described as beautiful?

This is only a concept though and could change substantially between now and launch, i think too many people see pictures of these concepts and immediately assume that’s the final product. I would image the front end might get through with some tweaks. I would imagine the Bonnet may retain the same shape but be full width to give decent engine access, and i would imagine the wings wont come right down in front of the wheels as it will be easily damaged. We’ll probably just see traditional wrap around plastic bumpers, which are surprisingly robust.
I Think the main problem lies with the rear, there is next to no load space in that and little obvious option for adding different bodies.

  16. Dennis:

” Well the current Defender doesn’t have the Transit engine anymore. Replaced a couple of months ago with the 2.2HDi lump from the XF, C6, Mondeo etc. ”

This information is wrong; it may share the 2.2 litre capacity with the Ford/PSA unit that you refer to, but it’s NOT that engine. It’s simply a lower capacity, lower emission, version of the original Ford Transit engine.
