By David Benson

The mighty Mini led the British Leyland firm to a record-making year in 1971, it was announced last night. It became the country’s most-produced car, topping the quarter-million mark for the first time. To be precise, 258,427. Which went a long way to help the company turn out a best-ever total of vehicles , 1,062,742. This was 90,747 more than 1970.
One black spot: 2,560 Triumph workers will be laid off today because of a strike by 650 at Liverpool.
