The Sunday Telegraph yesterday reported that Jaguar Land Rover has held talks with the Government about financial support for bringing a new £750m ($1.20 billion) engine plant to the UK,

The newspaper said senior management from JLR and parent Tata Motors Limited met officials from the Department of Business Innovation and Skills (DBIS) on Thursday.

It said JLR has identified three areas potentially to base the plant – Wolverhampton, South Wales and a site in India, with Wolverhampton the front-runner given its proximity to the British luxury carmaker’s existing three UK plants.

The newspaper cites a DBIS spokesman as confirming talks and saying Business Secretary Vince Cable is in “regular contact” with JLR concerning a range of matters. However, JLR could not be immediately reached for comment.

Clive claims that his interest in the BMC>MG story dates back to his childhood in the 1960s when the family’s garage premises were leased to a tenant with an Austin agency. However, back in the 1920s and 1930s, his grandmother was one of the country’s first female Garage Proprietors so cars probably run in his genes! Admits to affairs with Alfa Romeos, but has more recently owned an 06/06 MG TF 135 and then a 15/64 MG3 Style… Clive, who was AROnline’s News Editor for nearly four years, stood down from that role in order to devote more time to various Motor Racing projects but still contributes articles on as regular basis as his other commitments permit.

  1. I hope Land Rover remembers the history of its previous factories in South Wales.

Anyone know what’s happening to the old LDV site?
