The big Leyland shutdown got into first gear last night when 20,000 men heard that they will be laid off by the end of next week .
Worst hit is the giant plant at Cowley, where 10,000 workers will be thrown on the dole as production of Maxis, Marinas and Princesses halt.
Other plants earmarked for cutbacks include Rover Solihull (3000 men); Longbridge (2000); and Triumph Canley (5000). The rest of the plant by plant closures are still being worked out by management.
