Be thankful we never got the awful 55 mph speed limit that America endured for 13 years. This was the most widely hated and ignored speed limit in Amrrican history and many police forces didn’t enforce it strictly, allowing motorists to go up to 65 mph before issuing a ticket, and those that did were despised as motorists thought the police had better things to do. Also the 55 mph limit meant the era of truly powerful American cars was over for a time, as the speed limit, emissions controls and gas shortages saw cars either downsized or have their powerful engines sharply reduced in power.
