British Leyland, already affected by the strike at the Rubery Owen components plant said that about 80 per cent of its 135,000-strong labour’ force throughout the country had not reported for work, and its normal output of 4,000 vehicles a day was halted. The company has already been losing up to 2,000 vehicles, a day because of component shortages…

Jaguar at Coventry was one of the. few British Leyland plants where most workers turned up, although there was no car production.
