It’s that time of year again, and as usual I’ve spent the last couple of weeks navel-gazing about what’s happened in 2014 – and more importantly, what we can look forward to in 2015. The New Year’s resolutions generally come thick and fast, and usually involve me promising not to buy anymore crap cars, only to find myself breaking that promise within weeks, if not days.
Last year was pretty tumultuous, leaving Honest John Classics and moving back to lead Classic Car Weekly as its editor. The move back from online to print was a proper learning curve, and truth be told, it probably took me six months to get up to speed. The challenge is definitely the relentlessness of the job, the lack of a break, and the pressure to ensure we have a great news package every week.
Luckily, the classic car world has never been healthier, and there’s always something to report. It’s not immediate, like a website, but it’s not far off. I finalise the paper on Monday evening, and by Tuesday morning, the early printed copies are rolling into the office before going onsale on the newsstands on Wednesday morning. That’s pretty cool.
But now it feels like the CCW job is beginning to take shape, I’ve some time to start formulating my hopes and dreams for 2015, even if most will be dashed.
1) To buy a Citroen SM. I’ve been harping on about this for more than a decade now, and it simply muse happen in 2015. Otherwise it never will.
2) Add a Rover to the fleet. It’s been a while since I’ve had some ‘firm’ action, and it’s about time that I put my money where my mouth is again.
3) Get out more. The last year felt like it was either spent in my bedroom or at a desk in Media House. More events, more driving adventures, and more interesting ‘stuff’ need to happen.
4) Spend less time worrying about social media, and get more creative again. So much of mine – and many colleagues’ – energies are now wasted updating one’s statuses.
5) Eat less, walk further with the dog, get to the gym – oh they’re a given…
Thing is how will I actually do at keeping to them? We’ll see… But for the meantime, Happy New Year to you all, and I hope 2015 will be brilliant for you all!
